Frequently asked questions
Dr. Laval is a specialist and so you will need to get a referral. You may get one from your family doctor, a nurse practitioner or a virtual doctor.
All initial appointments at Appletree and PulsePoint will be virtual. After that appointment you will be booked in clinic if an examination or procedure is required.
At Appletree you will need to register at the Kiosk. At PulsePoint please take a seat and the receptionist will be with you. You will be brought into the clinic to get your height, weight and blood pressure. Please be aware that wait times can be long. We try to minimize the wait time as much as possible.
You need a new referral if Dr. Laval has not seen you in the last year, if you have a new concern or if you were discharged.
Condoms have an 18% failure rate. This means that in one year 180 women out of 1,000 will get pregnant who use condoms. If you use condoms you are advised to take a prenatal vitamin, a multivitamin or folic acid to prevent spinal bifida in your baby in the event of a pregnancy. Spinal bifida can be prevented by being on folic acid for 3 months before a pregnancy. You can also speak with Dr. Laval about more effective options for pregnancy prevention.
Cervical screening is a preventative test required by all women between the ages of 25 and 65 who have ever been sexually active. The test currently used is called the HPV test. It has been available in Ontario since March 2025. The test is done in the clinic with a small device called a speculum and a swab. The procedure is short and not painful. The test is done every 5 years. The test is done to make sure you do not have cancer of the cervix. It is not done in virgins or most women with a hysterectomy.
